To recognize the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, the community is invited to learn and engage in the following activities leading up to and on September 30.

    Community Resources

    Background

In 2020, the Canadian Government introduced legislation to establish a National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. September 30 provides an opportunity for every Canadian to recognize the impact of the residential school system, learn more about its lasting legacy, and reflect on how we can move forward, together.

The City of Barrie is committed to reconciliation and ensuring the tragic history and ongoing legacy of residential schools are never forgotten.

To recognize and commemorate this day, the City supports events that promote education and awareness to staff and community members leading up to and on September 30, in collaboration with the Barrie Area Native Advisory Circle (BANAC), the Barrie Native Friendship Centre (BNFC), and the Mamaway Wiidokdaadwin Primary Care Team.

Resources and opportunities for learning provided to City staff include the opportunity for staff to wear orange, workshops and cultural competency training to enhance cultural awareness of Indigenous peoples, and other educational resources.
