The City of Barrie is making improvements to the City’s Digital Information Standard (DIS), including the template and submission processes. We're inviting all external design consultants to join the City and its project partner, SolidCAD, to introduce the new template, review the changes and ask questions at a virtual education workshop.

We strongly encourage all consultants to attend one of the following sessions:

  • Tuesday, September 19th at 10:00 am-Noon EST
  • Tuesday, September 19th at 1:30-3:30 pm EST
  • Thursday, September 21st at 1:30-3:30 pm EST

Please contact Katherine Yuchtman, katherine.yuchtman@barrie.ca, for workshop links.

About the Project

In September 2022, the City launched a DIS Upgrade Project to continue to improve the standards and to work towards an automated approach for receiving and evaluating drawing submissions. The goal of these changes is to improve the consistency of the information received in the drawings and allow end-users, yourself included, to access the City’s open-source data much more quickly.

The City retained SolidCAD, a consulting firm that specializes in developing processes and systems that integrate Autodesk and Esri ArcGIS software to improve Engineering Design and GIS workflows. SolidCAD has provided  recommendations for updates to the existing DIS template, technology and automation, and a road map to  achieve the DIS goals. The changes being implemented are a direct result of discovery sessions, with internal and  external stakeholders, examining how the existing standard was being used and identifying challenges with the existing standards.

About the Improvements

The DIS Upgrade Project will provide significant time and cost savings for the City and our external consultants by:

  • launching an automated submission and validation tool that will provide immediate and detailed feedback on the drawings submitted, including required improvements.
  • using data tables in the AutoCAD template to allow more seamless, error-free data transfer to GIS and mapping software.

The DIS and template changes were launched internally in March 2023 to the City’s internal design group with positive results. The external launch of our updated DIS will be phased, with a soft approach to allow consultants to become familiar with the template and standards, as the project team works towards the implementation of the next phases. Once the new automated submission process has been completed, all future submissions will be done through the City’s DIS template to allow for the automated checker to validate the drawings submitted; the only exception will be for existing projects which will not be required to change over to the new template.
