Barrie, ON – Intake is now open for the City of Barrie’s 2025 Per Door Grant program, offered through the Housing Community Improvement Plan (CIP), to support the accelerated construction of new affordable housing units and purpose-built rental housing projects. Up to $5M in total funding is available to award to successful applicants, and funding will be awarded on a competitive basis. This program is accepting applications until end of day on May 15, 2025.
“One of Council’s priorities is to encourage a range of housing options to make housing attainable,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “This grant provides rapid investment in new housing units to facilitate the development of housing supply, especially affordable housing, across Barrie.”
The Per Door Grant is intended to provide flexible financial assistance to incentivize the creation of more affordable and rental housing units in Barrie. The Per Door Grant simplifies the incentive process by providing one single capital grant in place of tying incentives to specific fees and charges, such as cash-in-lieu fees, application fees, development charges (DCs), or other charges.
Market and non-profit housing developers are invited to review program eligibility and access application materials at barrie.ca/PerDoorGrant.
In the 2024 intake period, the Housing CIP Grants Review Group awarded a total of $9,857,312.60 to successful applicants. This will support the development of 500 purpose-built rental units, including 218 affordable units in projects of various sizes, ranging from smaller scale specialized affordable housing options to high density purpose-built rentals.
City Council recently approved allocating most of the 2025 Housing Accelerator Fund (HAF) payment to replenish the Housing CIP Reserve and offer the Per Door Grant program in 2025. The Government of Canada's HAF provides incentive funding to local governments encouraging initiatives to increase housing supply.
