(Barrie, ON) – Barrie's Royal Canadian Legion Branch and the City of Barrie will join communities across Canada on Wednesday, November 11 to honour and recognize those who have served our country, with a Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony at the Memorial Square Cenotaph.
As a symbolic act of remembrance and respect, Cadets will stand vigil at the Cenotaph from 7 p.m. to midnight on Tuesday, November 10, and from 6 to 9 a.m. on Wednesday, November 11.
The public is invited to participate in the Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony on Wednesday, November 11. The parade will start just after 10 a.m. from Dunlop Street East at Mulcaster Street and march towards Memorial Square, halting in front of the Barrie Cenotaph for the ceremony. Two minutes of silence will be observed at 11 a.m. followed by the laying of wreaths. The ceremony will also include a feu de joie, a ceremonial rifle salute fired with blank rounds.
To safely facilitate the Remembrance Day Parade and Ceremony, the following road closures with no on-street parking will be in effect from 6 a.m. to approximately 12:30 p.m. on November 11:
- Dunlop Street East from Clapperton Street to Mulcaster Street
- Dunlop Street East from Mulcaster Street to Poyntz Street
- Owen Street from Collier Street to Dunlop Street East
Mulcaster Street intersection at Dunlop Street East will remain open for north- and south-bound traffic until approximately 9:30 a.m. From 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., Mulcaster Street between Collier Street and Lakeshore Mews will be closed to through traffic to safely facilitate the movement of the parade.
Members of the community, local organizations, or businesses who would like to place a wreath at the Memorial Square Cenotaph are asked to make arrangements with the Barrie Legion (705-728-1412) by Saturday, November 7 at 1 p.m. Anyone who would like to keep their wreath is asked to pick it up by the end of the day on Thursday, November 12 before it is removed.
On Remembrance Day, Veterans ride Barrie Transit free of charge along with one companion by showing anything that identifies their status as a veteran.
Remembrance Day Flags
The City honours, remembers and commemorates Barrie’s fallen soldiers by featuring pictures of local veterans on flags each year. The flags are displayed in the fall, from mid-October until late November, downtown and along the waterfront. In 2026, nine new flags were added to the series. The City also has a story map featuring photos and stories shared by local families for the Remembrance Day Flag series.
Poppy Crosswalk
In 2021, the City installed artwork at the crosswalk across from the Cenotaph at Memorial Square featuring poppies, the official symbol of Remembrance Day. City Operations staff refreshed the poppy display this week.
