(Barrie, ON) – The month of June is recognized as National Indigenous History Month, and June 21 as National Indigenous Peoples Day.
Throughout the month, the City of Barrie is supporting and collaborating with community partners to provide opportunities to learn about and celebrate the rich heritage, diverse cultures, and significant contributions of First Nations, Inuit, and Métis peoples.
Events include:
- Flag Raising at City Hall on Monday, June 2 at 1:15 p.m.
- Regional Indigenous musicians and Community Fire at Meridian Place on Wednesday, June 25 starting at 3 p.m.
- Indigenous Film Feature at Meridian Place on Wednesday, June 25 at dusk (approximately 9:30 p.m. – weather permitting). In partnership with Downtown Barrie's Lawn Chair Luminata and the Barrie Film Festival.
Events happening to acknowledge June 21 for Indigenous Peoples Day around the region:
- Barrie Native Friendship Centre - Community BBQ to honour National Indigenous Peoples Day and Summer Solstice. Join us at Springwater Park for a sacred fire, family-friendly activities and more!
- Georgian Bay Native Friendship Centre Pow Wow featuring sacred fire, traditional music and more. Happening Friday, June 20 and Saturday, June 21 at Saint Marie among the Hurons.
