(Barrie, ON) - The City of Barrie is moving forward with plans to attract new opportunities in the defence, security, aerospace, and advanced manufacturing sectors following the withdrawal of an appeal of Zoning By-law 2026-076, which can now proceed as approved by Council.
Council approved the zoning by-law amendment as part of the implementation of the Mayor's Direction to support the growth of defence-related industries in Barrie. Following Council's approval, the zoning by-law amendment was appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal. The appellant has since withdrawn the appeal, and the Ontario Land Tribunal has confirmed the matter is closed. As a result, Council's approval of the zoning by-law amendment is now final and binding.
This outcome allows the City to move forward with plans to attract and grow businesses that support Canada's defence needs and support Ontario's Defence Industrial Strategy. This will help to strengthen the local economy, create jobs, and advance Barrie's role as a hub for defence, aerospace, security, and advanced manufacturing industries.
