(Barrie, ON) – The City of Barrie will receive $129,184,724 through the Province of Ontario's Development Charge Reduction Program (DCRP) after reducing residential development charges by 50 per cent to help deliver more housing.
Council approved the 50 per cent reduction on September 16, 2026. The decision made Barrie eligible for the provincial program, which requires municipalities to maintain their reduced development charges for at least three years.
The Development Charge Reduction Program helps municipalities offset revenues that would otherwise have been collected through development charges. Funding is intended to support infrastructure projects that enable housing growth and maintain community services as municipalities welcome new residents.
Barrie's funding allocation will support major wastewater infrastructure improvements that will increase treatment capacity, support future housing development and help ensure Barrie's wastewater infrastructure can accommodate continued growth.
The DCRP is part of the $8.8 billion Canada-Ontario Partnership to Build with federal funding delivered through the Build Communities Strong Fund’s Provincial and Territorial stream.
The funding supports the City's ongoing efforts to encourage housing development while investing in the infrastructure needed to serve a growing community.
