(Barrie, ON) – An upcoming road construction project on Big Bay Point Road will help support reliable water service and reduce the risk of emergency repairs and disruptions in the future.
The City of Barrie is lining an existing large watermain on Big Bay Point Road between Bayview Drive and Huronia Road. As part of the City’s proactive infrastructure management strategy, watermain lining will reinforce the system and prevent long-term issues.
Mobilization, including traffic control, is expected to begin July 23. The project is expected to be completed by December 2025.
Traffic and access impacts
The road will be staged and reduced to one lane in each direction on Big Bay Point Road between Bayview Drive and Huronia Road. Pedestrian access will be maintained during construction, and roads are planned to stay open to traffic at all times. Access for emergency vehicles will always be maintained.
Additional impacts during construction include:
- Closure of the cycling lane on the north side of the road (westbound). The cycling lane on the south side (eastbound) will remain open.
- Left turns will be prohibited from eastbound and westbound Big Bay Point Road to Welham Road.
- Vehicle entry to properties within the construction limits will be available, but vehicle egress will be restricted to right turns only.
- No parking on roadways in the active construction area.
Transit and service impacts
The construction will affect Barrie Transit. Route 12 will be on detour, and TOD-D stops 674 and 803 will be out of service. Temporary stops will be in place during this time. For the latest updates and to view active or temporary stop locations, visit myridebarrie.ca/news.
