(Barrie, ON) – Recent amendments to the City’s Zoning By-law gave the City additional tools to prevent illegal uses from operating in Barrie, allowing the City to take enforcement action on properties with businesses operating in contravention of federal or provincial laws by fining the property owner.
“Our message is simple: if you're operating outside the law, Barrie is not the place to do it. Illegal businesses have no place in our city,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “We will enforce the law, protect our neighbourhoods, and hold property owners accountable for enabling illegal activity.”
With support from the Barrie Police, the City has begun proactive enforcement under the updated Zoning By-law to address illegal uses that operate in Barrie. First Notices of Violation have been issued to property owners where violations have been confirmed, along with the associated fees. If the illegal use continues, the City will continue with further enforcement action, including additional notices and fees until the violation is resolved.
“Working with the City of Barrie, the Barrie Police Service continues to identify and address illegal businesses operating in Barrie,” said Police Chief Rich Johnston. “Our downtown-focused units have a consistent presence in the area to help address the changing issues in the heart of our city. We know there are many factors that can impact whether someone feels safe, even when crime is concentrated or isolated, and our approach balances compassion for all, with accountability for those who are breaking the law. By addressing illegal businesses, we can help ensure the safety of all those who work, visit or live downtown.”
The recent changes to the Zoning By-law strengthen the City’s ability to address illegal retail storefronts and help prevent similar operations from becoming established in the future. The updated fee structure also ensures penalties better support compliance, cost recovery and not permitting illegal uses to continue to operate. These changes are aligned with City Council’s strategic priority of community safety.
