Curbside Giveaway Day is Saturday, September 20; give away items you no longer need and pick up new treasures

(Barrie, ON) The City’s Curbside Giveaway Day is taking place this Saturday, September 20, 2025. This is a chance for residents to give gently used or unwanted items a second life, and/or find new-to-you items that others are giving away. It’s like a garage sale but without the money exchange.

Participating in Curbside Giveaway Day is easy:

  • Gather up items around your home that are no longer used, but that other people might like to have (toys, books, furniture, sporting goods, small appliances, tools, art, etc.). Now that the City has moved to automated cart collection, your old green bin and garbage containers can be repurposed for storing items or as a reusable yard waste container; however if you no longer need them, consider setting them out for Curbside Giveaway Day (clearly labelled as “FREE”).
  • On the morning of Saturday, September 20, place your items at the curb and clearly mark them as “FREE”.
  • Look for free treasures around your neighbourhood!
  • Participants can also share their available items by posting on the City's Curbside Giveaway Day Facebook event page

Apart from finding things for free, participants also benefit by cleaning their homes of unwanted items, while helping prolong the life of Barrie’s landfill. This supports a circular economy, which is a movement toward more sustainable options by considering using items in new ways so they can be reused, and sharing things instead of throwing them out.

Curbside Giveaway Day runs from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9 p.m. as there will be no special municipal collection. Residents are encouraged to share that this event is happening with friends and neighbours.

If residents need to dispose of items, they can visit barrie.ca/AlternativeWasteDisposalOptions or barrie.ca/landfill for more information on how to properly do so.
