Doors Open Barrie invites residents and visitors to explore fascinating local landmarks

(Barrie, ON) – Doors Open Barrie is happening this Saturday, September 27, giving residents and visitors a chance to explore some of Barrie’s historical properties, cultural buildings, and other notable sites. It’s an opportunity to go behind the scenes, explore unique architecture, and uncover the stories and places that make our community special.

The Doors Open Barrie event invites everyone to participate from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on September 27. The following sites are participating:

  • Allandale Recreation Centre: Join members of the Barrie Sports Hall of Fame and Mariposa School of Skating for a Sports Hall of Fame quiz
  • Barrie Fire & Emergency Services Headquarters: This building features contemporary architecture and a museum
  • Barrie Mosque: Interactive guided tours will be offered every hour, as well as free refreshments
  • Barrie Public Library (downtown branch): Enjoy Culture Days programming
  • Barrie Simcoe Emergency Services Campus: Meet community officers and tour parts of the building
  • Barrie South Simcoe Métis Council: Learn about the history of the Métis people
  • Barrie Visitor Information Centre: Visit a historical building and check out information on local attractions
  • Canadian Musicians Co-operative: Facility tour and a free vocal coaching session
  • Collier Street United Church: Visit this historical sanctuary and get a tour of their pipe organ  
  • Grey & Simcoe Foresters Regimental Museum: Guides will offer tours and explain the exhibits 
  • J'adore Fine Cheese, Chocolate & Wine: Visit this heritage building and learn about its history
  • Just Some Noise: Enjoy live music, try out equipment, and visit with local authors
  • MacLaren Art Centre: Enjoy Culture Days programming
  • McFinn's Traditional Irish Pub: Pop in for a tour and to learn about the history of Sean McFinn
  • Meridian Place: Take a walking tour of downtown starting at 12 p.m., led by the Barrie Historical Archive
  • Military Heritage Park: Visit the park and learn about military history from a Heritage Committee member
  • Spare Room: Explore this creative hub, try out the Risograph printer, and learn how to make a “zine”
  • The Arts House: Activities include yoga, art, concerts, and face painting

Doors Open Barrie is hosted by the City of Barrie, the City’s Heritage Committee, and Tourism Barrie, in partnership with the Ontario Heritage TrustDoors Open Ontario is an Ontario Heritage Trust program that invites communities across the province to open the doors, gates, and courtyards of unique and fascinating cultural sites.
