New rental housing development creates opportunities across Barrie's housing system

(BarrieON) – The City of Barrie and SkyDev are celebrating significant progress at 26 Grove Street West with Tower B nearing completion and the launch of Tower C, the final phase of a development that will bring 930 purpose-built rental homes to the community. Tower C will add 365 rental units, including 73 affordable homes supported through the City's Development Charge Deferral Program.

Through an agreement with the County of Simcoe, up to 32 households currently living in subsidized housing will have the opportunity to transition into new affordable units within the development as they become available. These transitions will help create capacity within the subsidized housing system, supporting other residents and families waiting for housing assistance.

“This is what strong partnerships look like,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “The City is working to create the conditions for more housing. SkyDev is delivering new affordable rental opportunities. And the County is helping ensure these homes create the greatest possible impact for residents across our community.”

As Barrie continues to grow, increasing the supply of rental housing remains a key priority for Council. Once complete, the three-tower development will provide 930 rental homes, expanding housing options for residents while helping address the community's need for additional rental and affordable housing.
