Free community events to share fire safety tips
(Barrie, ON) – Barrie Fire & Emergency Service (BFES) invites residents to participate in Fire Prevention Week, October 4 to 10, 2026. This year’s theme, “Charge Into Fire Safety™: Safe Charging Is a Superpower” focuses on the everyday charging habits that can help reduce the risk of lithium-ion battery fires and keep homes and communities safer. Most of the electronics we use in our homes every day are powered by lithium-ion batteries. In fact, almost everything that’s rechargeable uses this kind of battery.
“As technology continues to evolve, so do the fire safety risks in our homes,” says Fire Chief Kevin White. “Lithium-ion batteries are an important part of our daily lives, but they require proper care and attention. Fire Prevention Week is an opportunity to share practical tips that help residents charge safely, recognize warning signs, and reduce the risk of fires before they happen.”
BFES will be visiting schools throughout Fire Prevention Week and is hosting several free community events, including:
- Georgian College pop-up on Tuesday, October 6, at 1 p.m., 1 Georgian Drive
- Ask Barrie Fire session at RONA+ on Wednesday, October 7, at 2 p.m., Rona+, 71 Bryne Drive
- Barrie Fire Takeover and Kids Workshop on Saturday, October 10, at 9 a.m., at Home Depot, 10 Barrie View Drive
Since 1922, the National Fire Prevention Association has sponsored the public observance of Fire Prevention Week–a week where everyone can learn how to stay safe in case of a fire.
