Sophia Trunk Storm Sewers project resumes April 6

Barrie, ON – Work on the Sophia Street trunk storm sewer project is starting back up for the 2026 construction season. To complete the next stage of work, Sophia Street from east of Owen Street to Peel Street, including the Peel Street intersection will be closed from April 6 to April 30, 2026. The closure is required to install a watermain on Peel Street and the construction of a sanitary sewer on Sophia Street.

All vehicles will be restricted from travelling through the closure. Local access for residents will be maintained (with intermittent interruptions), and detour routes will be in place. Access for emergency vehicles to respond within the closure will be maintained. There are no impacts to transit services.

Work this season will include construction on Owen Street (McDonald to Sophia), Sophia Street (Owen to Peel), and Peel Street at Berczy Park. The work includes new watermain, sanitary sewer, storm sewers, and full road reconstruction, including a new sidewalk on Sophia Street. Construction will continue from April until fall 2026. Following April 30, construction will continue along Owen Street from McDonald to Sophia, including the Sophia Street intersection.

The Sophia Trunk Storm Sewers Project supports long‑term growth and flood protection in Barrie’s downtown. The project upgrades the storm sewer system along Owen Street and Sophia Street East and replaces aging underground and above‑ground infrastructure, including new storm, sanitary, and water services, updated lighting and traffic signals, and improved sidewalks and boulevards.

This is a multi-year project, with all work to be completed by summer 2027.
