2026 Stormwater Management Ponds Sediment Removal

Project Type
Stormwater & Creeks
Status
Upcoming
Estimated Completion
September 2026

Stormwater management ponds function to collect runoff from nearby urban areas. Stormwater runoff typically carries large amounts of sediment and other contaminants that are then held in the ponds so they do not reach the natural environment. As sediments and other contaminants accumulate, the pond’s ability to function properly is greatly reduced.

Annual pond sediment removal is required to ensure that stormwater management ponds function properly.

Schedule

Work is scheduled to take place between July and September 2026.

Work Details & Locations

This maintenance work is required to reduce the potential for flooding in the surrounding areas, and to reduce the risk of sediment and other contaminants from entering Bear Creek and Little Lake Watershed. The below locations require a full pond clean out, which will be completed by GMR Landscaping Inc.

  • Stormwater Management Facility LT06 is located at 86 Lions Gate Boulevard and has accumulated approximately 984 m3 of sediment.
  • Stormwater Management Facility BR08b is located at 90 Red Oak Drive and has accumulated approximately 595 m3 of sediment.

Sediment Removal Process

The most efficient and cost-effective way to remove accumulated sediment from the City's stormwater management ponds is mechanical excavation after dewatering the pond. Dewatering can be done in two ways:

  • Ponds constructed with a maintenance drawdown pipe can be dewatered by gravity.
  • Ponds without a maintenance drawdown pipe are dewatered using a pump.

Water discharged from the dewater pipes is treated to prevent sediment discharge into the natural environment. Prior to any mechanical excavation a full wildlife survey is completed.

Wildlife Protection Works

Wildlife protection works will include relocating any fish, turtles or amphibians within the work area to nearby locations and regularly conducting bird surveys to ensure the work area did not disturbing nesting birds.
