(Barrie, ON) – The City of Barrie has been in a Significant Weather Event since December 28, marking a full month and the longest time Barrie has ever continuously been in such an event. Crews continue to restore winter maintenance standards across the city and are working around the clock in frigid conditions to ensure roads are plowed and safe for residents.
Barrie has received 300 cm of snow (just over 9 and a half feet) so far this winter season (since November 1, 2025).
Snow lifts continue overnight to remove accumulation on arterial and collector roads in Barrie, with a focus on narrow curb lanes and on-street cycling lanes. In residential areas, there are contracted crews removing snow piles from cul-de-sacs. Crews also continue to address sight line concerns in areas where snow banks are very high. The Significant Weather Event cannot be lifted until all narrowed roads and cycling lanes have been addressed.
Winter maintenance operations continue to be impacted by a province-wide road salt shortage, but when temperatures drop to minus 10 degrees, salt does not work—whether put down by City vehicles or the salt you might use on your walkway. In very cold temperatures, sand is a better option to provide traction.
