The following information will help you to prepare for winter construction to ensure:
- Compliance with the Ontario Building Code
- Safety of construction workers and building inspectors
- Quality construction and successful project outcomes
Site & Worker Safety
Winter months pose unique challenges for those working on construction sites. To prevent accidents:
- Access points should be free and clear of snow and ice and properly salted/sanded.
- Proper ventilation should be provided when using indoor heating to prevent carbon monoxide buildup.
Cold Weather Concrete
Good concrete practices are critical to ensure concrete adheres properly during winter months and changing weather conditions. Refer to the Building Services’ Cold Weather Concrete Information Sheet for important information regarding Building Code requirements.
Construction Materials
Winter weather can be harsh on construction materials, leading to potential damage. Some ways to mitigate freezing effects are by using covers, tarps, products designed for cold weather, and heated storage facilities to protect materials from freezing. To avoid delays, familiarize yourself with the Ontario Building Code and manufacturer's specifications for materials so you are aware of product limitations.
