This new infrastructure project supports growth and development near the McKay Rd and Veteran’s Dr intersection in south-west Barrie.

The project extended along McKay Rd from east of Veteran’s Dr to west of the future Reid Dr extension and along Veteran’s Dr from south of McKay, northerly to Salem Rd. The project included roadway expansion on McKay Rd including intersection improvements at McKay and Veteran’s, and new watermains, and sanitary sewers along McKay Rd and Veteran’s Dr.

The road reopened at 1:50pm on July 4, 2024.

June 27, 2024

This project will be complete next week and the road will reopen to traffic on July 4, 2024.

Spring 2024

Work on McKay and Veteran's is progressing well. Electrical work including traffic signals and street lighting is completed. Boulevard grading and sidewalk construction is ongoing. Despite wet weather this spring, the project remains on schedule for reopening in July 2024.

The area remains an active site so motorists are reminded to respect the road closures and follow the signed detour routes.

Fall 2023

The McKay Road West and Veteran’s Drive intersection has been closed since May 2022, for the roadwork and infrastructure installation required to support growth and development in southwest Barrie. This project reached important milestones during the 2023 construction season with the installation of 3.5 km of watermain, 1.5 km of storm sewers, 2.5 km of road paving, and has brought necessary services to the area.

The road closure has been extended to July 2024. Delays from the complex infrastructure and utility work have impacted the completion of essential roadwork such as traffic signals, street lights, sidewalks, boulevards, and final paving—all which need to be completed prior to safely reopening the intersection.

There is no access through McKay Road or Veteran’s Drive during the closure and all existing detours remain in place until the project is complete next year. Motorists are reminded to follow the signed detour routes.

Fall 2022

Construction continues under the full closure of McKay Rd and Veteran’s Dr. Installation of the new sanitary sewer along McKay Rd is completed and watermain construction on Veteran’s Dr has started. The road reconstruction and grading work will continue into the winter months. The project is on schedule for completion in fall 2023.

Motorists are reminded that there is no access through the road closure or work zone. Please follow the signed detour routes.

Summer 2022

Construction is well underway with McKay Rd and Veteran’s Dr fully closed. Work has started on the new sanitary sewer along McKay Rd and the first of five tunnelling shafts has been built in the intersection. McKay Rd sewer work is scheduled to continue along with watermain installation on Veteran’s Dr during the summer months.

Motorists are reminded that there is no access through the road closure or work zone. Please follow the signed detour routes.

Spring 2022

This project is underway with site preparation work already started. The road closure of McKay Rd and Veteran's Dr is planned for May 24th, 2022 and is anticipated to last until November 2023. No traffic will be permitted within the work area during the road closure period.

Project Details

This project was the first phase of new infrastructure expansion to support development north and south of McKay Rd in the Salem Secondary Plan Area. Through this construction project water and wastewater service were extended south from Salem Rd along Veteran’s Dr, then westerly along McKay Rd.

Additionally, with the significant residential development planned, the project enhances McKay Rd by widening the roadway, adding new concrete sidewalks, a raised cycle track, and local stormwater management improvements. The road improvements also include intersection expansion and an upgraded McKay and Veteran’s intersection.

Public notice was completed in the form of newspaper ads and mailed Notice Letters to affected residents. McKay Road and Veteran’s Drive Improvements PIC Presentation was posted on the City’s YouTube Channel and the Presentation Slides were also available for review.

New 1200mm deep trunk sanitary sewer installed by trenchless construction from Veteran’s to future Reid Dr
Road widening to four (4) traffic lanes and a centre median/turning lane along McKay Rd and through the Veteran’s Dr intersection
McKay Rd urban streetscape including curbs, sidewalks, a cycle track, street lighting, traffic signals, landscaping, and stormwater management infrastructure.
