The City of Barrie is undertaking a comprehensive review and analysis of its entire wastewater network to investigate and identify likely sources of inflow and infiltration (I&I). I&I refers to rainwater and groundwater that enter the sanitary collection system and reach the Wastewater Treatment Facility (WwTF), which increases treatment costs and reduces the system’s overall capacity.
The project will focus on determining problematic areas within the sanitary collection system and providing recommendations to mitigate these flows. Flow monitoring data will highlight areas experiencing high I&I, which will then be further investigated through fog testing to pinpoint specific sources of inflow (stormwater) or infiltration (groundwater).
Project Updates
August 18, 2026
Fog testing works are planned to take place September 8–11, 2026 in the areas of Sovereign's Gate and Dean Avenue. The work will be completed between 10am–5pm. If the weather is unfavourable, the work is expected to take place the following week, September 14–18, 2026. Notices about fog testing works will be delivered to impacted properties.
Fog Testing of Sanitary Sewer Works
The City and its consultant will conduct fog testing of sanitary sewers within the City’s urban boundaries. Fog testing helps identify potential points where stormwater enters the sanitary system, which can increase the risk of basement flooding and add unnecessary costs to wastewater treatment. The areas planned for testing are subject to change.
The notices linked below are being delivered to the affected properties on the streets listed, near where fog testing will occur. The fog testing works will be completed September 8–11, 2026. The notices linked below include full information about how to prepare, what to expect, and frequently asked questions.
