(Barrie, ON) – The City of Barrie will be using harmless fog to test sections of sanitary sewers on October 20 and 21, 2025, as part of ongoing work to maintain and improve infrastructure. If weather is unfavourable, the work will be rescheduled to the week of October 27. Notices are being hand delivered to impacted properties.
Fog testing is an investigative tool that helps the City identify sources of inflow (stormwater) and infiltration (groundwater) in the sanitary sewer system. During testing, a fog will be blown into the sanitary sewers and staff will monitor the streets above to document where the fog comes out, such as from catch basins or maintenance holes. The fog has no odour, is not harmful to health, and will disappear within a few minutes.
The information collected will help staff identify areas that need to be fixed to reduce excess water entering the wastewater system, preventing backups and maintaining reliable service.
The Fire Department and Barrie Police Service have been notified of the testing schedule. If you ever suspect smoke or fire, always call 911.
