Downtown Patios

Application Process

Please refer to the outdoor patio checklist before applying for a permit and review the outdoor patio fee schedule

Downtown businesses interested in a patio must apply for a Right-Of-Way Activity (ROWA) Permit. The following inspections, approvals, and documentation must be provided at the time of application:

  • Health Unit Certificate of Inspection, 15 Sperling Drive, 705-721-7330
  • Copy of Liquor Licence for Patio Area, if applicable
  • Copy of Liquor Licence Questionnaire (required as part of an application for Municipal Clearance for a Liquor Sales Licence) – This can also be obtained from the City Clerk’s Office at City Hall
  • Site Plan of Outdoor Patio including Temporary Sidewalk and Accessibility
  • Security: Copy of Current Liability Insurance 
    General Liability Insurance from an insurer licensed in the province of Ontario for $2 million per occurrence with an aggregate limit of no less than $5 million to the Corporation of the City of Barrie against any liability for property damage or personal injury, negligence including death which may arise from the applicants operations under this agreement. The Corporation of the City of Barrie must be included as an “Additional Named Insured”. In addition the Commercial General Liability shall contain Cross Liability and Severability Clauses and Products & Completed Operations coverage including a standard contractual liability endorsement.

Non-compliance of municipal regulations and by-laws could result in permits being revoked or further conditions being added to the permits.

Other Patios

Businesses located outside of the Downtown Barrie BIA that are interested in applying for a patio permit need to apply for a Site Plan through APLI.

Related Permits & Licences
