This three-phase project reconstructs Duckworth Street from Bell Farm Road to St. Vincent Street and also includes a new watermain on Grove Street from Duckworth Street to Nelson Street.
The Duckworth Street work includes new watermain, sewer replacements, and right-of-way improvements including, new sidewalks, new pavement, intersection upgrades, and road widening for bicycle lanes. The Grove Street work includes new watermain, pavement and bicycle lanes.
This project was initiated in 2014 as a Class environmental assessment study to evaluate alternatives for implementing bike lanes and improved active transportation on Duckworth Street. The results of the EA were carried through into detailed design, which also included replacement of aging underground infrastructure and other infrastructure improvements.

Construction on Duckworth Street will be restarting next week. The contractor will begin with storm sewer installations and roadwork north of Grove Street East toward Bell Farm Road.
- Traffic will be maintained on Duckworth north of Grove while work progresses under partial lane closures.
- Rose Street and Bernick Drive will be closed at various times for intersection improvements. Additional updates will be made prior to these closures.
- Access for local residents and to local businesses will be maintained throughout construction.
- Transit detour details will be available at MyRideBarrie.ca/News.
Due to the poor condition of Duckworth Street pavement, construction was split into three phases.
Construction for phase 2 (Duckworth Street, Bell Farm Road to St. Vincent Street) commenced together with phase 3 (Grove Street East watermain). The majority of the work for phases 2 and 3 will be under construction in 2023 and 2024. The project is on track to be substantially complete by the end of 2024. The final paving of top lift asphalt will be completed in Spring 2025.
|Detail Design Complete:
Vehicle entry to properties within the construction limits will be available. At times, direct access to driveways will be interrupted for watermain/sewer work, sidewalk/curb replacements, and driveway repairs.
Water and wastewater services will be interrupted for short periods of time while connecting to the new mains. Notice of the service interruptions will be provided in advance.
Hydro, telephone, cable TV, and gas services should not be affected by the construction, barring any unforeseen circumstances.
The contractor will use traffic control measures to partially and fully close Duckworth Street and Grove Street at various locations, as construction progresses. Further notice will be provided surrounding closure dates. Resident, business and emergency access will be maintained throughout construction. Signed detour routes will be in place to direct motorists around the closure. Transit impacts and bus detours will be posted at myridebarrie.ca/News.
