As a key transportation corridor, Mapleview Drive East will undergo several transportation improvements to accommodate the growth of Barrie to 2031. The purpose of this project is to implement the preferred servicing solution as recommended by the Municipal Class EA process. The project includes:
- Improvements to the Yonge Street and Mapleview Drive East signalized intersection
- Reconstruction and widening of Mapleview Drive East (Yonge to Prince William Way) to 4 lanes, adding a multi-use trail on the north and south side, and more
The City of Barrie retained HATCH for the provision of engineering services for the preliminary and detailed design of the preferred alternative design solution for Mapleview Drive East between Yonge Street and Prince William Way (approx. 1.4 km).
As announced on March 28, 2025, this project is receiving funding support from the Province of Ontario through the Housing Enabling Core Servicing (HECS) grant.
Project Updates
November 7, 2025
Due to unforeseen delays in the tender process, the start of main construction along Mapleview Drive East has been postponed. Construction is now anticipated to begin in late 2025/early 2026.
Once more information is available and timelines are confirmed with the successful contractor, updated details will be shared on this page.
Utility relocations along Mapleview Drive East remain ongoing and are now expected to be completed in early 2026.
Project Features
Construction will include the following:
- Widening of the roadway to four through lanes (two per direction) with a centre median
- Addition of a multi-use trail on the north and south side
- At grade crossing of roadway and Metrolinx GO Rail Corridor
- Implementation of storm and sanitary sewers as required
- New stormwater management pond
- LID features
- Street lighting
- Improvements to the intersection at Yonge Street
- Traffic signals at the Kneeshaw Drive/Lily Drive intersection
- Traffic signals at the Royal Jubilee intersection
Schedule
At the time of EA study completion (November 2017), it was proposed to construct the roadway improvements and the grade separation at the same time, commencing construction in 2023. Due to changes in project priorities and funding availability, the project will be phased such that the roadway improvements are undertaken as originally planned, with an upgraded at-grade crossing, and the grade separation will be undertaken by Metrolinx in accordance with their capital plan, which currently anticipates the grade separation need in 2037.

Background
The City of Barrie Multi-Modal Active Transportation Master Plan (MMATMP) identified Mapleview Drive East as a key transportation corridor and recommended several transportation improvements to accommodate the growth of Barrie to 2031.
The City of Barrie subsequently conducted an Environmental Assessment and filed the Environmental Study Report for the transportation improvements of Mapleview Drive between Yonge Street and Prince William Way in November 2017. The corresponding Environmental Study: Hewitt Secondary Plan Area Transportation Improvements.
The Municipal Class Environmental Assessment (MCEA) is approved under the Ontario Environmental Assessment Act and allows municipalities to follow a streamlined process when undertaking municipal infrastructure projects.
