Discover the science of waste reduction through hands-on challenges and interactive learning! Join the City of Barrie Waste Management Team to explore what happens to your garbage, recycling, and organics after they leave the curb.

Participants will:

  • Test their sorting skills in a fast-paced waste sorting relay race
  • Learn how to correctly sort common household items
  • Meet red wiggler worms and discover how vermicomposting turns food scraps into nutrient-rich compost
  • Explore how everyday choices help reduce waste and protect the environment

About Waste Reduction Week:

The City is recognizing October as Circular Economy Month, and October 19 to 25 as Waste Reduction Week. One way the City supports a circular economy (a system where items are kept in circulation as long as possible) is by educating residents on ways to minimize and better manage their waste.

For more information on the City’s circular economy framework and ways you can support a circular economy, visit barrie.ca/CircularEconomy. To learn more about reducing food waste, single-use plastics, and textile waste, visit barrie.ca/RethinkWaste.
