About Sidewalk Infill Projects

The City undertakes sidewalk infill projects based on a prioritisation framework centred on improving safety for road users in residential areas in close proximity to schools, parks, recreation centres and other places where people walk without sidewalks. The framework also focuses on eliminating sidewalks that end mid-block.

Sidewalks are built as part of new developments and/or new subdivisions; sidewalk infill projects provide an opportunity to impact neighbourhoods where those larger projects are not happening.

There is no rigid schedule for sidewalk infill projects. Projects are dependent on annual budget availability. Typically, 1 or 2 locations are addressed per year. Projects are limited in size and focused on the highest priority locations.

Sidewalks are an integral part of the community and allow people of all abilities to safely traverse the right-of-way. Under the Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act, specifically the Integrated Accessibility Standards Regulation (Ontario Regulation 191/11), municipalities are required to improve accessibility in both new and existing areas.
