Project Updates
May 24, 2023
- 60% design completed (design process paused)
- Design on hold until 2031
- Property acquisition ongoing
- Construction start is currently scheduled for 2034
Project Features
The Design Concept includes:
- A new interchange at McKay Road and Highway 400;
- Widening McKay Road from two to four lanes on the bridge and in the vicinity of the interchange;
- Provision of sidewalks and bike lanes on each side of the road;
- Reduced posted speed from 80 km/h to 60 km/h; and
- Minimizing property impacts through design mitigation and refinements.

McKay Road Interchange Structure
The existing McKay Road overpass was replaced by MTO and opened to traffic in October 2017. The replacement bridge was constructed on the existing McKay Road alignment and accommodates two lanes of 3.50 m with 2.0 m side clearances.
The structure spans the existing (6-Lane) and future (10-Lane) Highway 400 cross-sections.

The replacement bridge has been designed to accommodate this future widening as the northbound lanes will be accommodated under the easterly span (where the existing Highway 400 is located) and the southbound lanes will be accommodated by the westerly span (currently unused ROW).
To accommodate the interchange, the overpass structure will have to be widened by 27.3 m, to an ultimate width of 38.9 m. The McKay Road replacement bridge was specifically designed to accommodate a future structural widening for the purpose of an interchange, including accommodating minimum vertical clearances (5.1 m).
