Scam Alert
We’ve received reports of a text message scam stating to act on an "Ontario Speed Sanction Warning" to avoid demerit points deductions. Please note: Penalty Orders under the Automated Speed Enforcement program were issued by mail/courier only; the City did not text or email Penalty Orders. Demerit points are not deducted for camera-based offences.
All Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) matters are now processed through the Administrative Penalty System.
- For Penalty Orders sent to ServiceOntario: If your Penalty Order has been sent to ServiceOntario for non-payment, you must pay ServiceOntario directly. Your Penalty Order can no longer be appealed and City of Barrie Court Services staff can no longer take your payment.
- For Penalty Orders not yet sent to ServiceOntario: Penalty Orders not yet sent to ServiceOntario can still be paid in full through the City of Barrie Court Services office to avoid the $20 late fee and the inability to renew your vehicle licence plate or obtain a new one. If you are unsure if your Penalty Order has been sent to ServiceOntario for non-payment, you may contact the City of Barrie at 705-739-4280, option 1.
Background
Automated Speed Enforcement used speed cameras to enforce speed limits.
As of May 21, 2025, and as per the Administrative Penalty System By-law, the City of Barrie’s Automated Speed Enforcement operated as an Administrative Penalty System. An Administrative Penalty System provides for a less complex but fair and transparent alternative to the court process. Only the registered owner or authorized representative of a vehicle plate can appeal an Administrative Penalty Order.
Barrie’s ASE program ended on November 14, 2025, following provincial legislation banning ASE cameras in Ontario municipalities. While the City’s ASE Program has ended, the Administrative Penalty System continued to operate until all outstanding Penalty Orders (with infraction dates on or before November 14, 2025) were processed.
