Curbside Giveaway Days take place twice per year in Barrie, in the spring and in the fall. The event is a chance to give gently used or unwanted items a second life, and/or find new-to-you items others are giving away.

It’s like a garage sale but without the money exchange. Everything you place at the end of your driveway or lawn on the specified day is free for others to pick up.

Participating in Curbside Giveaway Day is easy:

  • Gather up items around your home that are no longer used, but that other people might like to have (toys, books, furniture, sporting goods, small appliances, tools, art, etc.). Now that the City has moved to automated cart collection, your old green bin and garbage containers can be repurposed for storing items or as a reusable yard waste container; however if you no longer need them, consider setting them out for Curbside Giveaway Day (clearly labelled as “FREE”).
  • Starting at 8am on Curbside Giveaway Day, place your items at the curb and clearly mark them as “FREE”.
  • Look for free treasures around your neighbourhood!
  • Share available items by posting on the City's Curbside Giveaway Day Facebook event.

Apart from finding things for free, you also benefit by cleaning your home of unwanted items, while helping prolong the life of Barrie’s landfill. This helps support a circular economy, which is a movement toward greener, more sustainable options, by considering using items in new ways so they can be reused, and sharing things instead of throwing them out.

Anything that does not find a new home must be taken back in by 9pm the same day, as there is no special municipal collection. If you need to get rid of items, refer to Alternative Waste Disposal Options or visit barrie.ca/landfill for information on how to properly do so.

Please note: Properties in the downtown BIA are not able to participate in Curbside Giveaway Day since placing items on the sidewalk could be a hazard to pedestrians. View the map of collection areas to determine if your property is in this area. See alternative waste disposal options.
