Barrie is Canada's safest city

(Barrie, ON) – The City of Barrie has been ranked as being the country’s lowest on the Crime Severity Index (CSI), according to a recent Statistics Canada report. In 2022, the Barrie area was the second lowest in Canada on the Index.

In 2023, Barrie’s CSI was 48.1, while Canada's overall CSI was 80.5 last year. The CSI looks at both the number and the relative severity of crimes.

"We’re incredibly proud that Barrie has been ranked the lowest on the Crime Severity Index in all of Canada. This is testament to the hard work and dedication of our police service, Council, and the entire community,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “It's encouraging to see our ranking improve from the 2nd lowest to the top spot. It’s clear that when we work together, great things happen."

As well, Barrie's violent Crime Severity Index went down by almost 4 per cent over the last year, from 61.6 in 2022 to 57.9 in 2023.

Statistics Canada annually reports on the number and type of criminal incidents coming to the attention of police. The report analyzes changes in police-reported crime rates across the country. The volume and severity of police-reported crime in Canada increased for the third consecutive year—up 2% in 2023—an upward trend that began in 2015.
