Barrie, ON – Due to the forecasted high temperatures, the City of Barrie will make all public facilities available (during normal operating hours) for cooling centres. The cooling centres will remain open until the heat warning is lifted.
Due to the health risk that heat poses for manual curbside waste collectors, collection will commence early on Monday, June 23. Residents are asked to put their waste out for curbside collection any time after 7 p.m. the night before, or before 5 a.m. on collection day.
When early curbside collection is in effect, an alert is posted at the top of this website by 5pm the day prior. Notices are also posted on X and Facebook, and sent to residents in the impacted collection area by City e-news (based on recipient profile) and mobile app notification (based on notification preferences).
During a high heat alert, the public are reminded to:
- Rest frequently in shaded areas.
- Drink plenty of fluids.
- Never leave infants, children or pets in a parked car.
- Dress in cool, loose clothing and shade your head with a hat or umbrella.
- Check regularly on family, friends or neighbours who are at higher risk of heat-related illnesses. and who do not have air conditioning.
- Seek shelter indoors or in the shade.
Here are some other ideas on how to beat the heat:
- Visit one of four beaches along the shores of Kempenfelt Bay. Only Centennial and Johnson’s Beach have lifeguards in the summer, however, lifeguards are currently not on duty. Lifeguarding season begins on Friday, June 27. Residents are reminded to practise water safety; there is no substitute for parent supervision. Stay within arm’s reach, swim with a buddy and get trained. Visit barrie.ca/beaches for more information.
- Visit one of the pools located at the City’s recreation centres. Visit barrie.ca/Dropins for pool schedules.
- Visit a splash pad.
- The City’s recreation centres and libraries are open and available to the public during regular operating hours.
