(Barrie, ON) – As part of the City’s ongoing commitment to community safety, the City of Barrie and the Barrie Police Service (BPS) continue to strengthen their partnership through the enhanced use of the city’s traffic camera network.
Fifteen cameras are currently located throughout Barrie, equipped with capabilities that allow City staff to monitor traffic flow and support coordinated responses during incidents. The cameras provide encrypted video feeds that can be securely accessed by BPS when managing active situations or responding to emergencies.
“These cameras are another example of how Barrie is putting public safety first,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “By working together with Barrie Police, we’re using technology to help fight crime, keep our streets safe, and respond faster when incidents happen. This collaboration reflects our shared commitment to building a safer, stronger community for everyone in Barrie.”
The cameras are not used for automated red light or speed enforcement, and no automated tickets are issued through the system.
"The City's network traffic cameras provide enhanced situational awareness to our members when a major incident is taking place, a vulnerable person or child is missing, or a crime has been reported," said Barrie Police Chief Rich Johnston. "We are committed to being open and transparent about our efforts and actions to support public safety and crime prevention in the city of Barrie, and the carefully controlled access to these cameras will be invaluable."
BPS held an open house in March 2025 for the public to learn more about how the Barrie Police would utilize the cameras, and the retention and access restrictions in place. Information on BPS access to the City’s cameras, as well as BPS’s own CCTV cameras, is available on the BPS website, along with frequently asked questions. The City and BPS continue to work together on future improvements, with the goal of continued community safety.
