City of Barrie thanks Ontario’s big cities for providing support with ice storm cleanup

Barrie, ON – The City of Barrie will be getting assistance from a number of other Ontario municipalities starting next week. Mayor Alex Nuttall is the Vice Chair of the Ontario Big City Mayors and this week he put a callout to his Mayor colleagues who sit on the committee. In an overwhelming show of support, several cities have generously offered up equipment and crews to assist with Barrie’s cleanup. The City of Barrie extends gratitude to the following municipalities for their support.

  • Ajax
  • Brantford
  • Burlington
  • Cambridge
  • Guelph
  • Hamilton
  • Kitchener
  • London
  • Richmond Hill
  • Vaughan
  • Windsor

“I want to extend my heartfelt thanks to the municipalities who stepped up to help our community clean up following the recent ice storm,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “These municipalities are providing crews and equipment to clear our sidewalks and parks and get things back to normal in Barrie. It’s in challenging times like these when we are reminded just how strong our municipal partnerships are.”

Since the ice storm 26 crews have been out daily, including 24 chipper trucks, before the city received the generous offer of support from big city mayors. Operations crews from the municipalities will start arriving next week with equipment, including woodchippers to deal with the storm debris. Now that the extra help is arriving, the City will collect any brush that is piled at the curb. This cleanup is expected to take months due to the extensive amount of storm debris. The City would like to thank residents for their patience and understanding as we work together to get through this.

As a reminder, the City is waiving residential brush tipping fees until May 2. To support the storm cleanup, the City is also extending hours at the Barrie Landfill as follows:

Friday, April 4 – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm
Saturday, April 5 – 8:30 am to 6:30 pm
Sunday, April 6 – 8:30 am to 3:30 pm

Yesterday, the landfill had 720 customers, and 475 tonnes of brush were received in three days this week. In comparison, last April the landfill collected 700 tonnes of brush the entire month.
