Barrie, ON – The City of Barrie is continuing cleanup efforts following the recent storm. Crews are actively working across the city, prioritizing roads, parks, and public spaces. Cleanup will take time due to the extent of the damage, and we appreciate your patience. The City has implemented increased service measures to support ongoing cleanup from the ice storm.
Curbside & Yard Waste Collection
Due to the cancellation of curbside collection today (Monday, March 31), collection of garbage, organics, and recycling will occur tomorrow (Tuesday, April 1), starting in the regular Monday collection areas. Collection may be delayed; please leave materials curbside if they are not collected on your collection day. Any general delay information will be posted at barrie.ca/IceStorm.
The City has added extra collection support in advance of spring yard waste collection start (Monday, April 7). Special brush collections will begin immediately, with collection trucks patrolling City roads to help with cleanup. Residents are encouraged to place bundled brush curbside as soon as possible as special pickups may not align with regular waste collection days. Brush bundles must:
- be no larger than 1.2m (4ft) in length
- be no larger than 0.3m (1ft) in diameter
- be no heavier than 20kg (45lbs) in weight
- have limbs no more than 7cm (3in) in diameter each (and bundled per above)
Unbundled brush or oversized branches will not be collected curbside, but can be dropped off at the landfill site.
Ongoing Cleanup Operations & Support
There is a large cleanup ahead, as many trees were damaged or destroyed by the ice storm.
- In addition to City crews, additional certified tree service contractor crews are working across Barrie, prioritizing the removal of trees from roads (getting streets open/cleared, ensuring driveway entrances are open, removing hazards, broken branches from trees, clearing sidewalks, etc.) and parks (collecting downed materials and branches, cautioning off and inventorying damaged trees, etc.) based on priority and safety.
- If you are dealing with large trees on your private property, we recommend reaching out to a local tree service for assistance. For any trees that have caused damage to your property, please contact your homeowners’ insurance company for further guidance.
- The City is waiving residential brush tipping fees at the landfill site until Friday, May 2, to support storm cleanup. The landfill is located at 272 Ferndale Drive North and is open Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The Recycling Depot, located at the lower gate area of the site, is opening early for the season on Tuesday, April 1, and will temporarily accept residential brush debris. For more information about the landfill, visit barrie.ca/landfill.
Warming Centre
- The City of Barrie’s warming centre at the Allandale Recreation Centre, 190 Bayview Drive, remains operational to support residents in need during any power outages. This facility has heat and hydro and provides a safe, warm space for individuals who are experiencing cold temperatures or need shelter. Well-behaved pets are permitted. The warming centre will be open overnight tonight, Monday March 31.
