Licence 2 Ride gives Barrie youth a summer of free access to transit and recreation

(Barrie, ON) – Applications are now open for the City’s Licence 2 Ride (L2R) program, which offers Barrie youth aged 12 to 17 free rides on Barrie Transit and access to free recreational opportunities at the City’s recreation/community centres, from July 1 to September 2, 2025.

“The Licence 2 Ride program is a wonderful opportunity for Barrie youth to become transit users and have a fun, active summer at the City’s recreation facilities,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “Licence 2 Ride is another way the City supports and celebrates local youth.”

Over 1,300 L2R passes were given out in 2024. Pass holders visited a City recreation/community centre 4,242 times, and nearly 10,000 transit rides were taken by L2R pass holders last summer.

Youth who get a L2R pass can enjoy free activities throughout the summer, some of which include:

  • Select drop-in recreation programs, including open gym, public skating, and swimming
  • Access to the fitness centres at Allandale Recreation Centre, East Bayfield, and Peggy Hill Team Community Centres (for those thirteen years and older)
  • Free rides on all Barrie Transit routes, Transit On Demand, and Specialized Transit (for registered clients)

To register, interested participants can complete a one-page application form (parent/guardian signature required) available at barrie.ca/Licence2Ride, provide one piece of identification, and submit it in person to any of the City’s Recreation Centres for on-the-spot approval. The application deadline is June 30, 2025.
