Major construction projects begin this fall to support growth in Barrie’s south end

(Barrie, ON) – With Barrie’s south end continuing to grow, the city is investing in critical infrastructure to ensure roads and servicing keep pace with new housing and development.

Projects beginning this fall include:

  • Expansion of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street
Construction for Mapleview Drive East is expected to begin in November 2025, with completion targeted for Spring 2028. Construction for Yonge Street is expected to begin in spring 2026. Work will include widening Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street, improving key intersections including the Yonge/Mapleview signalized intersection, adding multi-use trails and sidewalks, and reconstructing St. Paul Crescent.
  • New Huronia and McKay Trunk Sewer and Watermain
Construction is expected to begin in October 2025, with completion targeted for Spring 2028. Work includes installing a new watermain on McKay Road East, new trunk sanitary sewers on McKay and Huronia Roads, and roadway reconstruction and widening on Huronia Road.

These projects are possible with $53.4 million in funding from the Government of Ontario:

  • $18.5 million through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Core Servicing (MHIP-HECS) stream for widening and reconstruction of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street.
  • $34.9 million through the Municipal Housing Infrastructure Program’s Housing-Enabling Water Systems Fund (MHIP-HEWSF) for trunk sanitary sewers on McKay and Huronia Roads.

“Investing in local infrastructure is part of our government’s plan to protect Ontario, strengthen the economy and create more jobs,” said Todd McCarthy, Ontario’s Acting Minister of Infrastructure. “The expansion of Mapleview Drive East and Yonge Street, as well as construction of trunk sanitary sewers on McKay and Huronia Roads, are part of our government’s nearly $4 billion investment in critical infrastructure that will make new housing possible. For the City of Barrie, these projects will help enable approximately 20,600 new homes.”

“These investments will ensure that the South end of Barrie continues to grow to meet the needs of residents and businesses,” said Doug Downey, MPP for Barrie – Springwater – Oro-Medonte. “Critical infrastructure investments will help support economic growth within the region, which helps to benefit all Ontarians.”

“These projects will ensure we’re improving local infrastructure, building stronger communities and opening up new opportunities for people to live, work and raise their family in Barrie-Innisfil,” said Andrea Khanjin, MPP for Barrie-Innisfil.

“Investing in infrastructure is investing in Barrie’s future,” said Mayor Alex Nuttall. “Thanks to the significant funding support from the province, these projects will not only support the homes and businesses being built in our south end, but they’ll also make it safer and easier for residents to get where they need to go.”

Residents should expect increased traffic impacts in Barrie’s south end while this work is underway. The city thanks the community for their patience as these important projects are completed.
