City of Barrie Marina

• Boat Launch

  Boat launch fee (daily) is $17.70 +HST (annual pass available). Please refer to the fees schedule for additional information.

• Shrink Wrapping & Winter Storage

  The Marina offers shrink wrapping and winter storage. Prices are based on the overall length of the vessel including bow pulpit and swim platform. For information about the fees and how to apply, download the shrink wrap fee schedule or the shrink wrap & winter storage fee schedule.

• Seabins

  A seabin is a bin with a pump that draws in water and debris. The mesh catch bag within the bin retains the debris while the water is pumped back into the Marina. Each bin can capture 3.9 kilograms of trash per day or 1.4 tons per year, including plastics over 2mm. Seabins are located at the City of Barrie Marina and Transient Marina.

  Throughout the 2023 boating season (May to October) the seabins were expected to collect more than 4,800 pieces of waste larger than 5mm from the lake. These items enter the waterway through wind, rain or direct disposal. Frequently caught items include:

  • Cigarette butts
  • Food & drink items such as bottle caps and wrappers
  • Packaging/plastic wrapping

• Floating Boom

  A floating boom is a floating barrier on the water, preventing debris from moving past, but allowing fish and waterfowl to move through freely. The collected waste is then manually removed from the water. Floating booms are located at the Bunker’s Creek and Kidd’s Creek culverts.

• How you can Help!

  You can help fight pollution by: 

  • Reducing waste and buying less plastic
  • Reusing and recycling where possible
  • Disposing of your waste in the appropriate bins

Surface Water Quality

• Pollen

  In the spring, pollen from plants is often blown onto the water’s surface where it accumulates due to its buoyant nature. Pollen may reduce water clarity before it dissipates toward the end of the season. It does not pose any risk to human or pet health.

• Biofilm

  This naturally occurring accumulation of organic matter can appear as clear or iridescent film; this is not oil. It occurs when plant life at the bottom of the lake decays and rises at a faster rate than microorganisms can consume it, especially in calm waters.

  Biofilm may pose a threat to human health if swam in. However, it tends to quickly deform on its own and often does not require a management plan within marinas.

• Pond Scum

  This green or brown filamentous algae grows into colonies on the water’s surface after organic matter at the bottom of the lake decays and rises. Formation of algal mats is naturally occurring.

  It may emit an odour and may not be aesthetically pleasing, but does not pose any risk to human or pet health. The City of Barrie Marina monitors pond scum to maintain water quality and limit recreational disturbance.

• Water Silk

  This photosynthetic filamentous algae may form silky dense mats, appearing as a vibrant green cloud beneath the surface of the water, and limiting visibility. Formation of algal mats is naturally occurring.

  This filamentous algae does not pose any risk to human or pet health. The City of Barrie Marina monitors water silk to maintain water quality and limit recreational disturbance.

• Blue-Green Algae

  Blue-green algae is a bacteria that can form dense blooms in water. This algae, most often appearing with bright blue or teal colouring, develops when an excess of nutrients enters calm, shallow, and warm water.

  Lake Simcoe has not experienced a large bloom, but smaller lakes are susceptible to blooms in autumn.

  Some forms of blue-green algae can produce toxins that are harmful to humans and animals. If you spot blue-green algae in the water, do not participate in any water activity including fishing, swimming, and boating.
