Be prepared for snow squalls and extreme cold

(BarrieON) – The City of Barrie reminds residents to be prepared and stay safe during changing winter weather conditions and dropping temperatures. Weather forecasts for the next few days suggest that more snow squalls and significant cold are possible, with temperatures expected to be below seasonal tonight and into the weekend.

During extremely cold weather, ensure that you:

  • are aware of the signs for frostbite and hypothermia
  • keep children and pets indoors
  • plan ahead and be prepared—check public weather alerts, travel advisories, and road conditions
  • pack a winter emergency kit in your car
  • check in on neighbours, friends, and family members who may need assistance

Further tips about being prepared for severe winter weather can be found on the City’s website at barrie.ca/SeasonalEmergencies. Visit the Simcoe Muskoka District Health Unit’s website for more information about how to stay safe during extreme cold.

Winter maintenance operations update

Barrie remains under a Significant Weather Event as crews are restoring winter maintenance standards across the city. Winter operations staff continue to work around the clock to ensure roads are plowed and safe for travel, while also doing snow removal and snow lifts on roads that have become narrowed due to the volume of snowfall. Snow lift crews are currently focusing on neighbourhoods with narrow streets, laneways, sidewalks, bridge decks, and other priority locations where snow cannot be safely pushed aside.
