Estimated Completion
October 2026

From mid-August to October 2026, Operations staff will manage and remove invasive phragmites in select stormwater management ponds and roadside ditches across Barrie. Control methods include foliar spraying, a combination of foliar spraying and mechanical mowing, and selective cutting/removal. This work is done each year to improve drainage function, restore native vegetation, and protect the local ecosystem.

Invasive Phragmites (European Common Reed) cause damage to Ontario's biodiversity, wetlands, and beaches. The perennial grass was transported to North America from its native home in Eurasia. The aggressive plant spreads quickly and competes with native species for water and nutrients. Learn more about phragmites and other invasive plants.
