About General John Hayter

The renaming of the Southshore Centre occurred in 2024 among a number of significant military anniversaries, including the RCAF's 100th anniversary and the 80th anniversaries of D-Day and VE Day. The City of Barrie is proud to support and honour the Canadian Armed Forces, with events and initiatives planned throughout 2024 and 2025.

Brigadier-General John Charles Hayter served in the Canadian Forces from 1951 to 2009. In 1952, Hayter joined the Grey and Simcoe Foresters and then began officer training at Borden at the age of 18 before heading overseas to take part in the Korean War. General Hayter has been an active volunteer at the local, national and international levels, holding key leadership positions in various organizations and clubs for over five decades.

Brigadier-General Hayter is renowned for his extensive volunteer work. His involvement with organizations like Saint John Ambulance, the Veterans’ Club of Barrie, and St. George’s Church Allandale exemplifies his commitment to community service and support. He also played a pivotal role in the establishment of Canada's Tomb of the Unknown Soldier.
