The Technical and Stormwater Operations section of the Operations Department, in collaboration with the Corporate Asset Management Department, consistently strive to ensure that the City’s assets are adequately maintained in the most cost-effective manner. Staff routinely undertake inspections of stormwater assets to ensure the safety and reliability of public infrastructure and surrounding lands, as well as the protection of the local environment.
The watercourse restoration projects being delivered in 2025 demonstrate stewardship for both the City’s assets and the natural environment. By addressing erosion issues promptly, and not allowing the conditions to worsen, the City is able to avoid harmful impacts to the surrounding urban environment, including roadways, and other critical infrastructure, as well as private lands.
These watercourse restoration projects use “bio-engineering” design and construction strategies (in other words, the construction includes natural materials such as boulders, cobbles, and plantings), and are designed by a fluvial geomorphologist retained by the City. It is found that natural materials tend to outperform manufactured materials in terms of overall cost, service life, aesthetics, and ecological benefit.
Project Updates
October 31, 2025
As of October 22, 2025, the work at Site 3 (Bayview Drive Dog Off-Leash Recreationn Area), is fully complete including all restoration, and the temporary trail closures have been removed.
Sites 1 & 2: Kidds Creek at Donald Street
This operational project will address active erosion within two sections of Kidd’s Creek affecting public and private property. One located within Donald Park and the second located between Donald Street and Henry Steet. The project will consist of bank and channel bed stabilization with goal of preventing further erosion.
Site 3: Mapleview Drive East (Bayview Drive DOLRA)
This operational project addressed ongoing erosion within a tributary of Lover’s Creek, which threatened an existing retaining wall supporting the roadway and underground infrastructure within the Mapleview Drive East corridor. This watercourse restoration work near the Bayview Drive Dog Off-Leash Recreation Area (DOLRA) locally realigned the creek channel and stabilized the banks to ensure the long-term safety and reliability of Mapleview Drive East. Temporary trail closures were necessary to complete this critical work, and the City thanks DOLRA users for their patience and understanding.
