The City of Barrie Transportation Master Plan identified Bayview Drive as key transportation corridor and recommended several transportation improvements to accommodate growth in Barrie to 2031.

This project includes road widening, cycle tracks, sidewalk work, new watermains and stormwater work on Bayview Drive between Little and Big Bay Point. The work also includes resurfacing on Bayview Drive from Little to Springhome.

Project Updates

August 1, 2025

Two-way traffic is open as of the evening of July 31. Construction work will continue on the east side. Regular traffic lanes are anticipated to fully reopen in November 2025, with final asphalt paving scheduled for Spring 2026. Area businesses and organizations remain open during construction. Motorists can expect delays while the contractor continues their work of:

  • Widening the existing road from two lanes to three lanes (adding a centre turning lane);
  • Installing cycle lanes on both sides of the roadway; and
  • Maintaining traffic control for worker and public safety.

Project Features

The Big Bay Point Road intersection at Bayview Drive was part of the Harvie Road/Highway 400 Crossing project, completed in June 2021. The improvements to Bayview Drive will match the improvements that were constructed at the intersection, and will continue north to Little Avenue.

Contracted construction includes:

  • Widening the road to include one northbound lane, one southbound lane and a two-way left turn lane in the centre
  • Off-road cycle tracks on both sides of the roadway where possible*
  • Accessible sidewalk on the west side of the roadway
  • Replacement and improvement to local water and sanitary sewer services
  • Stormwater culvert crossing upgrades
  • Stormwater quantity and quality improvements
  • Street lighting upgrades

*This project was redesigned for off-road cycle tracks as much as possible. The dedicated off-road cycle tracks could not be fully achieved throughout the corridor due to property, utility, public transit requirements, existing recreation centre parking, and conflicting use constraints.

Access to Businesses/Organizations

Area businesses and organizations will remain open during construction, and drivers and pedestrians will be directed safely through the construction zone to access local businesses, Innisdale Secondary School, Allandale Recreation Centre, and other organizations in the area.

A detour in effect August 2, 2024–July 31, 2025. The road closure allowed for one lane of continuous, one-way traffic southbound on Bayview Drive. Two-way traffic opened as of the evening of July 31, 2025.

Affected Services

Barrie Transit

Construction will affect Barrie Transit routes and schedules. Changes to bus routes in the construction area will be posted in advance and details will be available at MyRideBarrie.ca/News

Water Services

Water services will be shut off for short durations of the construction to allow for connection to the new watermain. At least 48-hours notice will be provided to property owners and businesses prior to any water shutoffs.

Curbside Collection

Curbside collection materials will be collected on the regular collection day during construction. Ensure everything for pick-up is curbside by 7am on your collection day so Primrose can bring items to the designated collection location. Please label containers clearly, so the contractor can return them.

Safety

The contractors are required to conduct work in a safe manner, such as using traffic barrels and fencing off excavations. Please use extra caution in the construction zone to ensure everyone’s safety.
