For your convenience, the City of Barrie has partnered with ServiceOntario to offer an online marriage licence application system.

Application Process

To begin the process, complete your online application through ServiceOntario.

After completing your online application, you’ll book an appointment through ServiceOntario to finalize your licence with Service Barrie.

Please review the following information carefully to ensure your appointment goes smoothly.

Each person getting married must present two original pieces of government-issued identification and one piece must include a photo. Examples of acceptable ID include:
- Birth Certificate (including any change of name certificates)
- Passport
- Driver’s Licence
- Ontario Photo Card
- Canadian Citizenship Card or Certificate
- Record of Immigrant Landing
- Permanent Resident Card
Photocopies or pictures of ID are not accepted. Health Cards cannot be used.
Divorces in Canada
If either applicant has been divorced, please bring the Divorce Certificate(s) to the appointment (not the Divorce Order). The top right of the Divorce Certificate will say CERTIFICATE not ORDER. We cannot proceed without a Divorce Certificate.
To obtain a Divorce Certificate, please contact the courthouse where the divorce was finalized.
Divorces Outside of Canada
If you were divorced outside of Canada, you will need to provide specific documents to prove that you are no longer married. These documents must be validated by the Government of Ontario and may take up four weeks to process. Visit ontario.ca/GettingMarried or call ServiceOntario at 416-325-3408 for more information.

A religious marriage ceremony may be performed by a person who is registered under the Marriage Act to perform religious marriages in Ontario. A civil marriage may be performed by a judge, a justice of the peace or a Municipal Clerk and/or their designate. The City of Barrie's City Clerk does not perform marriage ceremonies. Access lists of religious officials who are registered to perform marriages.
Did you know? You can book the Rotunda at City Hall for a marriage ceremony or other special event. Please note that the booking of a religious officiant, a judge or a justice of the peace would need to be arranged separately.
