Each November during Battery Collection Week—the first full week of November—batteries are accepted for curbside collection at residential properties.

Placing Batteries Curbside

  • During this week, filled battery recycling bags could be placed on top of your curbside collection cart on your regular curbside collection day.
  • If you did not have a cart set out for collection, you could place battery recycling bags on the ground at the curb.
  • Battery recycling bags must have been clearly visible, as they were removed by the driver and placed in a separate compartment within the truck.
  • Battery recycling bags SHOULD NOT have been placed inside carts or inside recycling boxes.

Acceptable Batteries

The program is for single-use batteries only, including type AAA, AA, A, C, D, 9-Volt and button batteries commonly used for hearing aids and watches. Collected batteries are sent for processing to separate and recycle the various components. Get details on safe battery storage.

Unacceptable Batteries

Cell phone, laptop, car batteries, as well as battery packs were not accepted, but can be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Drive North), which is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm.

Battery Recycling Bag Pickup Locations

Due to uncertainty in the postal service, battery recycling bags were not mailed to residents in 2025. Battery recycling bags were available for pickup until November 7, 2025, at the following locations:

Alternatively, batteries could be placed in clear, sealable bags or unused battery recycling bags previously provided by the City.

Safe Battery Storage

Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material, prior to disposal. Do not use the battery recycling bag to store batteries long term; this can be a fire hazard. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with materials that could conduct electricity or heat. Some battery types require terminal protection, like taping. Visit Call2Recycle for detailed information on how to protect terminals

Alternative Disposal Options

Outside of Battery Collection Week, batteries (hazardous waste) are not collected curbside, but they can be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Drive North), which is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm. Find additional drop-off locations with Call2Recycle
