Each November during Battery Collection Week—the first full week of November—batteries are accepted for curbside collection.
During this week, you can place battery bags beside your recycling boxes on your regular curbside collection day. Battery bags with instructions were mailed to households through Canada Post admail during the week of October 7, 2024. Batteries can also be placed in clear, sealable bags.
The program is for rechargeable and single-use batteries only, including type AAA, AA, A, C, D, 9-Volt and button batteries commonly used for hearing aids and watches. Collected batteries are sent for processing to separate and recycle the various components.
Cell phone, laptop, car batteries and battery packs are not accepted, but can be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Drive North), which is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm.
Safe Battery Storage
Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material, prior to disposal. Do not use the battery bag to store batteries; this can be a fire hazard. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with materials that could conduct electricity or heat. The terminals on 9-Volt batteries in particular, should be covered with electrical tape prior to storage.
Alternative Disposal Options
Outside of Battery Collection Week, batteries (hazardous waste) are not collected curbside, but they can be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Drive North), which is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm. Find additional drop-off locations with Call2Recycle.
