Each November during Battery Collection Week—the first full week of November—batteries are accepted for curbside collection.
During this week, you can place battery recycling bags on top of your curbside collection cart on your regular curbside collection day. DO NOT place battery recycling bags inside carts or inside recycling boxes. If you do not have a cart set out for collection, you can place battery recycling bags on the ground at the curb. Battery recycling bags must be clearly visible, as they will be removed by the driver and placed in a separate compartment within the truck.
Battery recycling bags are available for pickup at select City facilities. Alternatively, batteries can be placed in clear, sealable bags or unused battery recycling bags previously provided by the City.
The program is for rechargeable and single-use batteries only, including type AAA, AA, A, C, D, 9-Volt and button batteries commonly used for hearing aids and watches. Collected batteries are sent for processing to separate and recycle the various components.
Cell phone, laptop, car batteries and battery packs are not accepted, but can be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Drive North), which is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm.

Safe Battery Storage
Batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material, prior to disposal. Do not use the battery recycling bag to store batteries; this can be a fire hazard. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with materials that could conduct electricity or heat. The terminals on 9-Volt batteries in particular, should be covered with electrical tape prior to storage.
Alternative Disposal Options
Outside of Battery Collection Week, batteries (hazardous waste) are not collected curbside, but they can be taken to the Barrie Landfill Site (272 Ferndale Drive North), which is open Tuesday–Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm. Find additional drop-off locations with Call2Recycle.
