Outside of Battery Collection Week each November, do not place batteries curbside for regular waste collection. Year-round, batteries can be disposed of free-of-charge at the Barrie Landfill, 272 Ferndale Drive North (open to Barrie residents only). Batteries are accepted at the landfill in three areas:
- Waste & Recycling Depot*
Open Tuesday to Saturday, 8:30am–3:30pm. Located at the top of the hill, past the scalehouse. - Recycling Depot
Open seasonally (generally April to late November), with HHW being accepted on Saturdays only. Located at the bottom of the hill. - Household Hazardous Waste Facility
Open Saturdays only, 8:30am–3:30pm. Located at the top of the hill, past the scalehouse.
*Only household batteries (AA, AAA, C, D, 9-volt and button batteries) can be dropped off at the landfill's Waste & Recycling Depot. Lithium-ion batteries (those from cell phones, drones, and remote-control cars) must be disposed of at the HHWF or the Recycling Depot on Saturdays only.
Batteries are an exception to other household hazardous waste, as batteries have more options for disposal at the landfill site.
Storage Prior to Disposal
Prior to disposal, batteries should be stored in a cool, dry location, away from any flammable material. During storage, battery terminals should not be in contact with conductive materials. The terminals on 9-Volt and lithium batteries should be covered with electrical tape prior to storage.
RPRA Site Lookup Tool
Ontario's Resource Productivity and Recovery Authority (RPRA) offers a 'Where to Recycle' map that includes batteries and more. The RPRA is the regulator mandated by the Government of Ontario to enforce the province’s circular economy laws.
