Drinking Water Week takes place May 5 to 11

Free public tours of Surface Water Treatment Plant on May 8

(Barrie, ON) – The City of Barrie is observing Drinking Water Week, from May 5 to 11, by recognizing the vital role that tap water plays in daily life, the infrastructure that is required to carry it to homes and businesses, and the critical work that water professional staff do each day.

“Barrie’s water is thoroughly treated and regularly tested to make sure that what comes out of your tap always meets the Safe Drinking Water Act requirements, and City staff are dedicated to producing high quality tap water,” said Diane Moreau, Manager of Water Operations. “Water Week is a chance to appreciate and learn what it takes to bring safe and reliable drinking water to residents.”

To recognize Water Week, Water Operations staff will be providing free public tours of the Surface Water Treatment Plant (20 Royal Parkside Drive) on Wednesday, May 8. Two tours will be held starting at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. Tours begin promptly at the start time and will last approximately one hour; please arrive 5 to 10 minutes before the tour begins. Barrie gets its water from both groundwater and surface water sources. The distribution system, consisting of approximately 4,000 hydrants and 672 km of watermain, reliably provides safe drinking water to the community. In 2023, the City produced almost 14,000 million litres of drinking water.

Source water protection is also essential to ensure the safety of Barrie’s drinking water, and everyone can play a role. Whether you are a developer, business owner or homeowner, learn about steps you can take each day to help protect drinking water by visiting barrie.ca/SourceWaterProtection
