The City awarded Contract 2024-005T to Greenspace Construction Inc. (Greenspace), which included repairing inlets and outlets in various stormwater ponds throughout Barrie. The project also included the construction of access roads to facilitate future pond maintenance.

This work was part City Council’s approved 2024 capital budget and aligns with City Council’s strategic priorities and goal of updating and improving infrastructure.

Project Updates

December 17, 2024

All stormwater management pond works for LV02, BR03, and LT04 have been successfully completed. Since completing the upgrades, ongoing observations indicate that each pond is maintaining its permanent pool levels and aquatic vegetation is flourishing.

These improvements comply with legislative requirements, and contribute to a healthier and more resilient ecosystem. The enhancements are a significant step forward in improving our community’s water quality and flood control infrastructure.

Work Locations

  • LT04 Stormwater Management Pond: Located at 90 Hanmer Street East
  • BR03 Stormwater Management Pond: Located at 129 Lougheed Road
  • LV02 Stormwater Management Pond: Located at 475 Welham Road

LT04 stormwater management pond had an increased flow from three inlet structures, due to urban expansions, upstream. This caused damage on the existing inlet, impeding effective water treatment. This outlet was prone to frequent clogging and needed repairs to ensure optimal functionality.

BR03 and LV02 stormwater management ponds contain critical stormwater infrastructure that require regular maintenance. Accessing these structures for operations and upkeep has become challenging due to the steep embankments, highlighting the need for access roads.

Project Features

Greenspace completed the following works:

  • Constructed access roads at LV02 and BR03 locations;
  • Repaired and retrofitted existing outlets at BR03 and LT04 locations;
  • Cleaned and removed sediment in existing the channel at BR03; and,
  • Reconstructed an armourstone revetment spillway with embankment rock protection where erosion had occurred at LT04.
