Fleet Assets

The City's fleet of vehicles and equipment enables teams across the City to provide services to the community. The Operations Department ensures that vehicles and equipment are properly maintained, serviced, and repaired to meet safety standards and operational requirements, enabling various municipal departments to carry out their duties effectively and efficiently. Additionally, the City oversees fuel management, vehicle procurement, lifecycle planning, and fleet optimization efforts to maximize resource utilization and minimize costs.

The City's fleet is being electrified, where feasible. Learn about the phased conversion approach

Fleet infrastructure includes:

  • Vehicles: Light-, Medium- & Heavy-duty Vehicles and Firefighting Apparatus
  • Equipment: Trailers and Light, Medium & Heavy Equipment

Overall, the fleet asset replacement value is approximately $75M and fleet assets are in fair condition.

Asset Management Plan Key Findings

Full information about the City's management of fleet assets is contained on pages 168–180 of the 2025 Corporate Asset Management Plan.

The 2025 Corporate Asset Management Plan includes three key findings:

  • Approximately 33% of assets are past their optimal service life, resulting in increased repair costs, reduced reliability, and potential risks to service delivery. 10% of fleet assets are classified as very high-risk, including critical firefighting apparatus.
  • A backlog of over $24 million in fleet replacements has accumulated due to historical underinvestment.
  • Continued funding of the Fleet Replacement Program is necessary to improve the reliability of the fleet, minimize spending on emergency repairs and address the backlog.
