Building permit records consist of drawings, lot gradings, final inspection reports, occupancy reports, and occupant load reports. The City retains building permit records as per the City’s Records Retention Program Policy.
Building Permit Records can be requested for viewing; however, it is not guaranteed that all records are available. For security reasons, the building and architectural plans for specific types of buildings (i.e. City facilities, banks, religious buildings, etc.) will not be made available.

How to Request a Search
To conduct a building records search, you must submit:
- Building Services Department Document Request Form
- Proof of Ownership (driver’s licence, health card, passport, or photo id showing address) OR a signed Owner Consent Form / Letter from the Property Owner
- Retrieval fee, as per the Fees By-law, Schedule C (Freedom of Information Application fee)
- All above items to Service Barrie:
- in person: first floor of City Hall, 70 Collier Street, Monday–Friday, 8:30am–4:30pm
- by mail: Service Barrie, P.O. Box 400, Barrie, ON, L4M 4T5

Key Process Items
- The retrieval fee is non-refundable (even if no records are produced). Additional fees may be required.
- We endeavour to provide a prompt response. Record search timelines will vary based on the scope of the search.
- There may be specific records that are required to be requested under the Municipal Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act. If this process is applicable, you will be notified.
- The Requester will be contacted to discuss search results and will be provided with an estimate of additional fees to be invoiced based on the request.
- Building Services staff cannot provide any consultation or interpretation of the documents retrieved.
- When a search is complete, building records will be emailed to the Requester upon receipt of payment for any additional fees invoiced. These fees can be paid by debit, cash, credit card, or cheque through Service Barrie.
