The process for obtaining a patio permit differs depending on the business location.
Downtown Patios
The 2024 downtown patio season is from April 12 until November 15.
Downtown businesses can take advantage of summer weather by offering outdoor dining experiences amidst the pleasurable downtown and in proximity to the waterfront. Patios located in the Downtown Barrie business improvement area (BIA) are on municipal property. The patio season is from the second Friday of April to November 15, in alignment with the City’s winter control and spring cleanup maintenance schedules.
Downtown establishments can extend outdoor patios to the edge of the street. Pedestrian traffic flow will be maintained through the provision of temporary sidewalks, designed for pedestrian safety and temporarily located on some on-street parking spaces. Interested business owners are asked to contact the Downtown Barrie Business Improvement Area (BIA) (pre-approval from the BIA is required).
Non-compliance of municipal regulations and by-laws could result in permits being revoked or further conditions being added to the permits.
Other Patios
Businesses located outside of the Downtown Barrie BIA that are interested in applying for a patio permit can contact Enforcement Services at enforcement.services@barrie.ca, by phone at 705-739-4241 or in person at 45 Cedar Pointe Drive.
Hours of operation for patios on private property are governed under the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario.
Related Permits & Licences
Business owners interested in obtaining a liquor licence for the outdoor patio will require licence approval from the AGCO. This is a separate process to be undertaken by the applicant. As a prerequisite, the applicant is required to complete the City's liquor licence questionnaire.
