Traffic calming is the installation of physical measures to alter negative motorist driving behaviour. The objective is to achieve uniform driving patterns at reduced speeds on roads where lower speeds enhance safety and livability in neighbourhoods.

Speed Cushions, Bollards, & Planters

Traffic Services staff within the Development Services Department work with ward councillors to determine the use of seasonal temporary measures including speed cushions, flexible bollards, or planters and their locations.

Additionally, one collapsible bollard is installed within each ward on the centre line of the roadway to bring enhanced awareness to pedestrians crossing the roadway. Locations are selected based on the highest volume of pedestrians at an Intersection Pedestrian Signal (IPS) within school zones. If the ward does not have an IPS, the bollard location is at an all way stop with high pedestrian volume.

Seasonal measures are installed in the spring/summer and removed in the fall to prepare for winter maintenance.

Radar Speed Boards

Staff work alongside ward councillors and residents to determine exact locations for radar speed board installations. These boards can be relocated throughout the year to help staff analyze traffic data and notify motorists of their speeds. Radar speed boards have been effective with lowering operating speeds when present.
